Olfactive family: Gourmand

The gourmand family brings together fragrances inspired by the kitchen and patisserie: caramel, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, honey, praline, rum or meringue. It is a seductive and warm family, with a characteristic sweetness that can feel almost edible. Born in the late 1990s, gourmand is today one of the most beloved niche categories.

Gourmand fragrances: patisserie, caramel and sweet warmth

The gourmand family officially entered perfumery with the launch of Angel by Thierry Mugler in 1992, which combined praline and chocolate with floral and fruity notes in a revolutionary way. The term „gourmand” was coined afterwards to describe this category of edible fragrances. Today the family includes everything from simple, creamy vanillas to complex artisanal confectionery, aged rum or single-origin coffee constructions.

Gourmand does not necessarily mean extremely sweet. There are dry gourmands that evoke dark chocolate, coffee or sweet tobacco; alcoholic-warm gourmands (with rum, cognac, whisky); and even savoury gourmands that combine caramel or honey with an unexpected salty note. The diversity of the family is greater than the label suggests.

At The Scent Nest, gourmand selections are chosen carefully for the quality of their construction: we are interested in gourmand fragrances with character and depth, not simple dessert recreations. There is an enormous difference between a fragrance that smells of cheap caramel and one that evokes house-made praline; this difference becomes clear with a sample.

Frequently asked questions about Gourmand

What does the gourmand olfactory family smell like?

The gourmand family smells of patisserie and kitchen ingredients: caramel, vanilla, chocolate, coffee, honey, praline or meringue. It is a warm and comforting sweetness that feels almost edible.

Is the gourmand family different from the vanilla family?

The vanilla family focuses on the creamy, balsamic note of pure vanilla; the gourmand family includes a wider range of edible ingredients including caramel, chocolate and coffee, with vanilla often as a background.

Are gourmand fragrances suitable for men?

Yes. There is a solid tradition of masculine gourmand fragrances, especially around notes of coffee, sweet tobacco, leather and dry caramel. Masculine niche gourmand is a fascinating category.

Does gourmand mean too sweet?

Not necessarily. There are gourmands that are drier (dark chocolate, bitter coffee) or even savoury (salted caramel). The choice depends on how much sweetness you are comfortable with.
